Parents usually love getting involved in the baby nursery decoration chores that need to be taken care of before the baby comes. They choose the crib, the dressing table, a few cute rugs, and maybe a neutral color paint or paper for the walls.
But when ‘chores’ are done in the baby’s room, the baby ultimately enjoys looking around as he learns about the world around him. Until about seven months, most infants lie on their backs and look up at the ceiling. Entertaining decorations now exist that can pasted onto ceilings, changed around, and taken down when the time comes.
A popular design is a likeness of the night sky with bright twinkling stars that actually do shine and twinkle in the dark. As the child gets older, some parents keep this up as they teach their children about the various constellations. Other parents take it down, put up other decorations, and then later on about the age of five or so, they might put it back up.
When decorating a nursery, stay away from strings, cords, soft pillows and comforters, and anything an infant could be smothered by should he get his face too deeply into the surface and not be able to turn away. Most pediatricians recommend not using pillows and covers at all.
Also choose colors that infants will be attracted to. Looking at colors is part of the learning process and certainly part of their entertainment when they are alone. Unlike adults who tend to choose colors based on feelings, what’s in style, or what matches things already in the room, infants don’t develop a full color spectrum of sight for months, but once they are able to fully distinguish bright from soft colors, they will turn to brightly colored sections of their room.
Anything that hangs and moves is fun. A mobile that is placed on their crib that has music and cute little articles that hang down and twirl is a big hit, and has been for decades. Kids simply like to see things move. Make certain the strings are sturdy enough so that these little objects don’t start detaching themselves on their own.
A new introduction to nursery designs is the sticker phenomenon. Large removable stickers can be purchased either in sets or separately, and themes include movies, action heroes, nursery rhymes, and even zoo characters. They come in large stickers, bright colors, and can be placed on walls or ceilings. They can be easily peeled off when the time comes, and re-used.
