The Health Risks of Having Migraines While You Are Pregnant

January 22nd, 2010 Petra Vollavic Posted in pregnant No Comments »

There are many added health risks to being pregnant. Here we look at the association of migraines during pregnancy and the increased risk to you and your babys health.

A new study in the United States linked migraines while pregnant with an increased risk of having a stroke. The study found that it was in fact 15 times more likely than non pregnant women. We should point out that the British Medical Journal has additionally stated that the overall risk is low.

Data was collected from over thirty three thousand pregnant women who were also diagnosed with migraines.

Other factors involved were age. Women over forty were found to be more at risk, being 2.5 times more likely to experience a migraine while pregnant than those that were less than 20. It was also discovered that white women experienced more migraines whilst pregnant than other races or ethnicities.

It is beleived that the cardiovascular system is not operating correctly and that the migraine is simply a sympton of this. There are links with migraines and increased risks of high cholesterol, blood clots, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The producers of the study believe the best explanation of the results is the interaction of migraines and the natural physiological changes that occur while pregnant (e.g. an increase in heart rate and blood volume) and that this results in additional stress on the vascular system.

Previous studies have pointed towards a problem with the cells that make up the inner wall of blood vessels. It is thought that they don’t function correctly when a woman is pregnant and also suffers from migraines.

The findings continue to solidify the belief that migraines, and especially those with an aura or visual change at the same time, are linked to women also suffering heart disease and strokes.

Headaches During Pregnancy

January 21st, 2010 Petra Vollavic Posted in pregnant No Comments »

There are a few side effects that come hand in hand with being pregnant. Here we look at headaches and pregnancy.

Headaches generally occur more often in woman who are pregnant because of the hormonal changes and increased blood flow. Fatigue and stress can also contribute, as can too much caffeine.

Approximately 20% of women will experience headaches while being pregnant and most find that they occur less in the last few months. Although they can worsen after the baby is born.

Cold packs, soothing, sleep and darkened rooms are all methods of treatment for headaches, without taking drugs.

Headaches caused by tension can be alleviated by using cold compresses to aches along the back of your neck. You can also alleviate headaches by ensuring you have a balanced, healthy diet and having several small meals in a day.

When sinus headaches occur, warm compresses have be known to help. Apply these to to your temples, forehead and either side of your nose as these are the areas occupied by your sinuses.

You can do exercises to help you reduce stress, like imagining you are in a tranquil place. You can experiment with different methods to try to reduce your stress levels but if these do not work you can get in touch with your doctor or a therapist as it can be helpful to have someone to talk to.

Contact your doctor prior to consuming any medication, even over the counter ones like ibuprofen and aspirin. acetaminophen can be safe to take while pregnant, although it is still better to consult your doctor first.

Talk to your doctor before taking pain relievers, even if you have taken over the counter medicines such as ibuprofen or aspirin for pain before you were pregnant. Acetaminophen is usually safe during pregnancy, but again, it is best not to use medications unless your doctor has prescribed them.

Considering Names For Your Baby Girl

January 18th, 2010 Desiree B. Johnson Posted in pregnant No Comments »

So you’re having a baby girl and now you need to name her? Well you have come to the right place. Names for a baby can be very important and mean a wide variety of things. I have not had the pleasure of being a mother to a girl yet but hope one day soon I might be able to claim that title. I have spent time looking over names for a baby girl because I do hope one day to have one. One baby girl name that has recently become popular is Chloe which means “blooming” in Greek. This could mean that your daughter may be full health or she may have a “blooming” personality.

Emma, thanks to Friends is another very popular girls name, it means “universal” in Latin. So she could be someone who travels, or maybe she will be someone who just fits in well at school. Names for girls can be fun to pick out because their meanings can be so broad, for example Ava, another Latin girl name meaning, “like a bird.” Maybe Ava will be an airline pilot or maybe she’ll be graceful, like a ballerina. Or it could even mean rather then fight, she’ll take flight, or avoid arguments.

A very popular Italian name, such as Isabella can go very well if you want to go outside the Latin origin derived names. Isabella means “God is my oath”. This could be used for someone who is has a religious background. Or maybe the name Abigail that means “joy of the father”. This Hebrew name could mean having a joy for God or being the light of your daddy’s eyes. Maybe Madeline would suit you well, which means “woman of Magdalen” and is of English origin; or a name that represents an “elf army”, like Olivia. Brianna is a cherished Irish name meaning “high noble”.

Maybe you would like to do something that is a bit more traditional just like the name Isabella meaning “God is my oath”, well the meaning is the same for Elizabeth. Try the name Catherine that has roots from Greece and means “pure”. You never know if she wants to be a nun or a loving mother and wife. She may end up being hardworking, then the name Nicole derived from France would be a good match. Nicole could possible help us all through this economic crisis.

Whatever you choose in a baby name, just remember that what matters is that it fits well with your child, you wouldn’t like your Elizabeth walking around as Madeline.

Getting Pregnant After Miscarriage

December 25th, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

pregnant
Is getting pregnant after a miscarriage any different from getting pregnant if you never been pregnant before?

Yes and no. No different because you still have to fall pregnant at your ovulation time and it is better to know when that will happen.

But it is also different because you need to look at the reasons why a miscarriage occur in the first place and try to avoid it happening again.

Miscarriages can occur for different reasons: being under stress, contracting an illness, physical trauma or many other reasons that remain unknown.

The reasons that remain unknown are normally related to fetus abnormalities. And very often it is due to fertilization which occurs because of old sperm with an old egg that is defective.

Let me explain…

In order to achieve healthy conception you need a freshly released egg and fresh sperm. Sperm is considered to be fresh and viable on 1st and maybe 2nd day after ejaculation. But the normal life span of sperm is around 3 days.

So, if on the third day after ejaculation the sperm fertilizes the egg, the pregnancy is likely to abort in the early stages.

The same thing can happen with old eggs. The egg is healthy and viable on the 1st and maybe on the 2nd day after being released from the ovaries then becomes old and potentially defective. Fertilization of this egg will probably end up in a miscarriage.

So, how to avoid fertilization with old sperm or an old egg? First, you need to know the length of your cycle and the exact time of your ovulation.

Ovulation normally occurs on day 14 of your cycle if your cycle is the normal 28 days. So, in order to avoid old sperm you should abstain from intercourse at least two days before ovulation (abstain on 11th and 12th day).

Then during ovulation time you should have frequent intercourse (on day 13 and 14).

Then, to prevent fertilization of an old egg you should abstain again on the day 15.

If your cycle is long (longer then 28 days) your egg stays inside longer which makes the egg old before it even gets released. So, women with long cycles will have more problems getting pregnant and carry healthy pregnancy then women with shorter cycles.

If you period is long you should try natural methods first to make your cycles shorter. These include improving your general health, improving your diet, doing moderate but regular exercise, having enough rest and relaxation, taking vitamins and other things that make you healthier.

Very often general health improvements practiced for 3-4 months or so will be enough to regulate your cycle. When your cycle gets to 28 days or less you should start watching for fertility signs and try to pinpoint your time of ovulation. Then plan your sexual activity in order to avoid old sperm and old egg.

When you ovulate later than day 15 of your cycle, it is a good idea not to try to conceive at all. This pregnancy is likely to abort in the early stages or be somehow defective because of a potential old egg.

To sum up, you can have a healthy pregnancy after miscarriage but there are a few things you should look at. First, is there a reason why you had a miscarriage?

Secondly, you should look at your cycle: the length of it and when you ovulate.

And thirdly, you should work on avoiding old sperm meeting an old egg. It seems like a lot of work you have to do but eventually all this work is likely to result in what you want – a baby.

If this seems complicated it is only a matter of some education. I have helped many people to understand how this all works, so it is not impossible. All you have to do is spend a little time learning and you increase you chances of a good pregnancy 10 fold.

Pregnancy Fitness- a Routine That Lasts for Nine Months

December 25th, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

months pregnant
Copyright (c) 2007 Jess Harley

So the rabbit died as they said in the old days. You got two pink lines on your home pregnancy test and your doctor confirmed it. You are going to be a mommy! Congratulations, you have an incredible journey ahead of you. You are going to need plenty of energy to grow a life inside of you and a good workout routine will help you.

A lot of women are under the misconception that exercise during pregnancy is bad. Unless you have complications such as a threatened miscarriage or you are a high risk pregnancy, most doctors will recommend you exercise throughout your pregnancy. Exercising during pregnancy can help you balance your hormones, help loosen your bowel movements, relieve stress, and help avoid or control gestational diabetes. It also can help you with your weight gain and make labor and delivery a little easier on you. There are some modifications though you will have to make to your exercise routine and some guidelines to follow especially if you have not really exercised before you were pregnant.

First get your doctors ok to exercise through out your pregnancy. As I said earlier, unless you have a complication your doctor will more than likely give you the ok. Once you have the ok, think about what exercises you did in the past. If you have not done much, start off slowly. Walk for about five minutes a day and add an additional five each week until you are up to thirty minutes. Even if you have worked out before you got pregnant, you do need to tone it down a little because you are going to be carrying extra weight.

You want to make sure you do low impact activities that will get your blood pumping but not get you out of breath. If you have exercised before you should keep your target heart rate at 140-150. It is going to be less if you never really exercised before. This does not mean you have to run out and get a heart rate monitor; you can do the talk test. If you are doing your exercise and you find that you can not talk without feeling winded, you are working out too hard. You want to find it a little challenging to talk but not be huffing and puffing.

So what kind of exercises should you do? Almost every doctor will tell you to walk. Walking just thirty minutes a day, three times a week will have a positive impact on your pregnancy. Yoga and Pilates is becoming the hip thing to do and help with your mental health while pregnant. Make sure you do a pregnancy geared class or video since they are designed specifically for your new body. Aerobics are good also, along with walking you have swimming, or even light jogging will work.

So what should you avoid, most doctors will recommend that you cut out any sit-ups and some weight lifting after your first trimester. This is because once you hit four months, your uterus will probably be slitting on at least one of your major veins and can slow your blood returning to your heart. So take it easy on those crunches. NO matter how many you do while your pregnant you are still going to get a baby belly!

How long should you exercise? Well, that is really up to you. Some women report being able to exercise all the way up to their delivery date while others have to stop by the time they hit their third trimester. When you are pregnant you really need to listen to your body and if you find you can not walk as much as you could a month ago, then you need to stop. Do not push yourself. It is not the time for the “no pain no gain” motto. Rest when your body tells you too.

Gone are the days when being pregnant meant you should do nothing. You can still exercise. Keep in mind though you are exercising to maintain a healthy pregnancy, not to lose weight during your pregnancy.

Start Enjoying Your Pregnancy at 15 Weeks Pregnant

December 23rd, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

weeks pregnant
Ling Tong asked:

You are three weeks into your second trimester when you are 15 weeks pregnant. You will find that your energy is returning and you are able to stay up later at night. In spite of how energetic you feel, you still need to get a full nights sleep because the baby benefits from your rest just as much as you do. Your belly is also growing at this stage making you visibly pregnant. This could cause you some discomfort when you lie down. Adding extra pillows to the bed can help you feel more comfortable, especially a body pillow that you can wrap your arms and legs around. You may start to feel too warm at night and this can affect your internal body temperature. It is best to turn down the heat at night and add more blankets to the bed if your partner finds it cold. You will probably throw these off as you sleep and become warmer.

Although the baby is starting to move about inside the uterus, you do not have any fluttery feelings yet. This won’t happen for another few weeks. When you do start to feel the movements, they will feel quite similar to gas rumblings and you won’t notice them until they become more frequent.

The babys neck and shoulders are well formed at 15 weeks and the head is in the proper position in the body. Eyelashes and eyebrows will start to develop at this stage and some hair will start growing on the head. The eyes are also in the right spot but the baby cannot see yet because the eyes are shut. However, he/she can sense light through the shut lids.  If you shine a flashlight in your tummy and concentrate on what you feel, you may even feel the movement as the baby moves away from the light. The ears start to look human and less like those of an alien.

One thing you will be able to feel is the baby hiccoughing. Since the baby can suck and swallow at this stage of the pregnancy, there will be times when it swallows too much amniotic fluid. You will be able to feel a slight thumping sensation when this happens. By now the baby has grown to a length of about 4 inches and weighs about two ounces.

Since the baby will start to grow faster after the 15th week, you do need to make sure your diet is filled with healthy foods that will supply you and the baby with the nutrients you need for energy. Even though you may have unusual cravings, try to stay away from eating too much junk food because you may feel as if you are constantly hungry. You may be glad that morning sickness has passed, but it can still crop up when you least expect it, such as when you get a strong smell of certain foods.

Even though you have a little baby bump, you have only gained about five pounds. The baby is only about the size of an apple and the arms seem to be longer than the legs.

You Can Get Pregnant on Birth Control

December 22nd, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

months pregnant
You can still get pregnant even if you have been on the pill for years or months. Pills are almost a hundred percent effective in preventing pregnancies, but it is only true if you use it perfectly. By perfect, we’re talking taking the pill without miss at the same time throughout your cycle. Missing one dose or taking one late drastically ups your chances of getting pregnant at your next sexual encounter. If you only rely on the safety net your pill provides every time you have sex, it’s high time to start thinking about requiring your partner to use a condom or using another method together with the pill. Without these precautions, you seriously risk getting pregnant on birth control.

Of course, there are really no foolproof ways about avoiding the bump especially if you are a fertile, healthy young woman. The condom may break, your cervical cap can get dislodged or, sometimes, it’s just your luck. For these occasions, there’s always Plan B.

What’s your Plan B?

Plan B is an emergency contraception pill that contains the hormone progestin. Also known as the “morning after pill,” it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to prevent pregnancy from occurring after you have unprotected sex.

Unknown to many, you don’t get pregnant immediately after having unprotected sex. Clinically, you only get pregnant when the fertilized egg implants itself in your uterus. Even if your egg has been fertilized, you are not technically pregnant until it implants itself. Of course, sperm cells still have to swim through your reproductive system to find your egg; an activity which can take hours or days at most. This said, Plan B offers you an advantage if you use it properly.

How to put the Plan into action?

The key to using Plan B is all about the timing. You don’t want the sperm to reach your egg and you certainly do not want the fertilized egg implanting itself in your womb. Plan B is best taken the morning after or less than 72 hours after you had unprotected sex. Given this most important bit about using Plan B, here are some general guidelines that can help it work for you well:

Get Plan B as soon as you can.

Plan B is available by prescription but is sold over-the-counter in most pharmacies. Get a prescription from your health care provider so you can get it ASAP. If your local drugstore does not carry Plan B or is out of stock, you can log on the Internet and buy it from an online pharmacy. Many reputable online pharmacies deliver medications, especially those that are critical like Plan B, within two to three days so you’re still right within the ideal time of taking it.

Take the first dose at once and the second one 12 hours after.

Plan B comes in two doses. Take the first one immediately or within three days of having unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the more effective it’ll be for you. Be prepared for side effects like drowsiness or nausea. The second dose should be taken 12 hours after you took the first dose.

Using Plan B can make you safe for unplanned pregnancy but remember that it is not a form of regular birth control. After five days, use a personal pregnancy kit just to be sure. Alternatively, you can also visit your doctor to be doubly sure.

What is Trisomy 13 ?

Trisomy 13 is a chromosomal abnormality. It is also known as Patau Syndrome. It is one of many chromosomal abnormalities which have been identified. One which everyone knows of is Downs Syndrome, which is similar, but less serious.

The abnormalities in these syndromes are caused by an extra chromosome being transferred to the fetus during initial development. Normally, 23 chromosomes from the father, and 23 from the mother, combine to ‘create’ the child. In these cases an extra copy of one of the chromosomes (in Anastasia’s case, the 13th) is added, giving a total of 47, instead of 46. This causes abnormal development in the womb.

Trisomy 13 babies usually don’t have a long life, 70% pass away within 7 months of birth. Many are still-born, or miscarry. The children who last past a year usually only live for another year or two. Only one recorded case has lived past childhood.

Common abnormalities include badly formed, or damaged brain structure, heart defects, cleft lip and palette, unformed, or badly formed, eyes and ears, Simian crease (frowning brow), twisted limbs, etc.

Anastasia had no formed eyes, cleft lip and palette, and slightly deformed ankle and wrist joints. Her internals were surprisingly fine, except for her heart, which was large and weak.

Early Pregnancy Symptom – Signs Tell That you are Pregnant

December 12th, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

months pregnant
If you are expecting pregnancy, you might be undergoing some body changes and experience early pregnancy symptoms. Many women tend to ignore some of the symptoms that they come across after conceiving and fail to detect their pregnancy. Therefore, it is essential to take a note of every single body change you observe in order to confirm pregnancy. Many symptoms are even experienced before conceiving, but then check out the intensity of arrival of those symptoms. Observe carefully and inform your physician in detail. The early stage of pregnancy brings a number of symptoms to every woman.

However, not every pregnant woman experiences the same group of symptoms in their early stage at the same propensity. Your symptoms may not resemble with those experienced by one of your acquaintances. Therefore, if you have missed one of the pregnancy symptoms one of your close acquaintances has felt, it does not mean you have some complications. It is our endeavor to impart you knowledge on the pregnancy symptoms that are most likely to appear in the early trimesters, signaling that you are pregnant. Check out below what possible signs you may expect during the early stage of your pregnancy.

Common Symptoms Of Pregnancy

Each early pregnancy symptom gives indication of your pregnancy. On the other hand, unusual pregnancy symptoms and sudden changes in pregnancy symptoms may signal you that you might have some complications. In that case, you should not delay and must rush to doctor immediately. Identifying which symptom is normal and which is not, is only possible when we have a clear idea about pregnancy signs. Read our guidance on early pregnancy symptom to acquire information on occurrence of pregnancy signs. Our information will help you prepare yourself better for pregnancy. So let us start with early pregnancy symptoms:

1. Missed periods – many women feel tizzy and anxious when periods have crossed due dates. Missed period, according to the most of the individuals and pregnant women is a prominent indication of pregnancy. However, a missed period may follow other factors as well, such as certain medications or side effects of medical treatments, stress etc. Therefore, consult your doctor immediately when your period is overdue whether it is an early pregnancy symptom or not.

2. Implantation Bleeding – Right after conceiving, you might notice slight bleeding, which is, as per medical experts, known as implantation bleeding. As the fertilized egg implants itself to the uterus wall, you may find some vaginal spotting which is normal and very common early pregnancy symptom.

3. Abdominal cramping – Many pregnant women complain about cramping pain and contraction in their uterus as they experience during periods when before pregnancy. This is also considered as a strong indicator of pregnancy.

4. Tender, Swollen Breasts – If you are having sore, swollen and tender breasts, take it seriously and inform your physician or take a home pregnancy test. Some women experience this every month just before their periods start!

5.Morning Sickness – This is another very common early pregnancy symptom. Morning sickness is usually experienced as a feeling of nausea during morning and any other time of the day as well. You may as well feel an increased sensitivity to taste and smell due to this queasy feeling during early pregnancy. However, it is up to you to differentiate between indigestion and morning sickness!

If you have experienced all, some or one early pregnancy symptom of the above, get a home pregnancy test kit and get yourself tested, if you have any dubious results, talk to your doctor without any delay.

Nutritional Advice for Pregnant Women

December 6th, 2009 admin Posted in pregnant No Comments »

months pregnant
When you are pregnant it is increasingly important to watch what you eat. Since you are now eating for two every bad nutritional choice will not just effect you, but also your baby. In general terms, there are two things that you need to be monitoring. First, you need to monitor how much you are eating as getting the correct caloric intake during pregnancy is crucial. Secondly, you need to be watching what you eat because the wrong types of food can be damaging to your baby. In this article I will discuss both the above issues in greater detail and provide you with some solid nutritional advice for your nine month pregnancy.

As already stated getting your caloric intake right is very important during pregnancy. Consuming too many calories and putting on too much weight whilst pregnant can increase your risk of contracting a blood pressure related disease. Contrastingly, not getting enough calories during your pregnancy can lead to your baby being born underweight and even slow down fetal development.

So where do you go for advice for on the number of calories you should be consuming each day? Your doctor should always be your number one port of call. They are professionally trained in this area and also know about you and any specific issues affecting you and your baby. Every pregnant woman is unique and will have slightly different requirements. Therefore, your doctor is the best source of information in this area and should not be overlooked in favour of this article.

However, you can determine the general amount of calories you need using a free online BMR & Caloric Intake Calculator (just do an Internet search). This calculator will determine your recommended daily caloric intake BEFORE pregnancy. You then need to add approximately 300 daily calories to this figure during your second and third trimester to support your baby’s increased rate of growth. Generally, no additional calories are needed during the first trimester but again this may not be the case for you. Only your doctor will know for sure.

Once you have your daily caloric intake sorted you also need to consider what you are eating. There are a number of foods that you need to cut down on or even avoid completely whilst you are pregnant. I have outlined three of these foods in the list below:

1) Alcohol:- Whilst there are no set recommendations on the amount of alcohol you can consume during pregnancy, a number of sources suggest that the number of alcohol related birth defects is on the rise. Alcohol can also potentially lead to miscarriage, low birthweight or stillbirth. These are quite significant risks which can be avoided by giving up alcohol during your pregnancy. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy but if you want to be a responsible mother you should have the discipline to avoid alcohol for nine months.

2) Uncooked Meat & Dairy Products:- Deli meats, undercooked eggs, unpasteurised cheeses etc often contain pathogens (such as e.coli, salmonella and listeria). These pathogens can lead to serious infection for both you and your baby. In pregnant women the symptoms can include diarrhea, vomitting and dehydration. In the baby these pathogens can ultimately lead to stillbirth and miscarriage. Therefore, if you are a fan of these types of food try to limit your intake during pregnancy or avoid them completely if you can.

3) Unwashed Fruits & Vegetables:- By consuming unwashed fruit or vegetables you are putting yourself at serious risk of Toxoplasma infection. Whilst Toxoplasma is generally not a risk for pregnant women it can be seriously damaging for undeveloped babies. It only takes a few seconds to wash the fruits and vegetables you consume so make sure you always clean your fruit and veg before consumption. This small act can make a huge difference to the health of your unborn child.

This article is not intended to scare you or make you worry. My aim is to make you aware that things you didn’t previously regard as important could now be very important. An undeveloped child is much more fragile than a fully developed human being and as an expectant mother you are ultimately responsible for the health of your baby. If you want the best for your baby, read this article, take the advice on board and then go consult your doctor regarding your diet as an expectant mother.
