So, you want to go it alone, on your own? You don’t think you need to pay some company to help you determine if your new business partner, au pair or future son-in-law is on the up and up. Be prepared for long hours of research, lots of paperwork and a great deal of waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

Step 1: Verify Identity

The first thing you have to do when conducting your own criminal background check is to verify the subject’s identity. You don’t want to discover that you’ve just spent days researching the background of the wrong person. At the least you will need full birth name, any married or adopted names, and the person’s birth date. Most public records such as arrest records, court records and residential records require birth date verification because there is a good possibility that there really is more than one John Smith running around out in the world. The possibility of two John Smith’s sharing the same birth date is real, but mighty slim. If you’ll be considering a deep background check, say through the FBI’s criminal database, you’ll also need a set of fingerprints. As a prospective employer, you have the right to ask for this information, even the fingerprints. Your prospective son-in-law might find it strange, however, unless you can lift his from a glass or door knob or something without his knowing it.

Step 2: Verify Previous Places of Residence

Unless you know for certain that the subject of your criminal background check has lived at one and only one address for his/her entire life, you’ll need a record of all previous places they have lived. Most electronic databases have this information for at least 7 years. Some go back even longer. In the event that you’ll need to do legwork to carry out your criminal background check (and be prepared, you most likely will) you’ll have to cover all possible jurisdictions.

Step 3: Conduct Your Criminal Background Check

You can begin your criminal background check with your subject’s current residential jurisdiction. You’ll have to make a request of the court clerk for any records regarding your subject. You can forget about any crimes he/she may have committed before turning 18 (in some cases 21) as juvenile records are typically sealed. You can search at the local and state levels fairly easily in most cases with a simple request form. You may have to wait a day or two for that request to be considered legitimate, so be prepared to wait. After you’ve been granted permission, you’ll have to slog through boxes and boxes of papers in most cases. Computerized arrest and court records are fairly recent innovations. Small towns and cities tend to either not have them, have them only recently, or have a back-log of files waiting to be entered into the new database. If you are lucky enough to conduct your search in a larger city with computerized filing firmly established, you may still need to dig through the dusty boxes in the basement of the courthouse for any records of crimes committed prior to the computer’s use.

Now, remember when we discussed verifying a residential history? Here’s why – you’ll need to conduct local searches in each and every local jurisdiction. That means that if the person in question has lived in seven different cities in 6 different counties in the last 5 years, you’ll have to visit each and every one of them before you can be assured of a clear record. No open-to-the-public nationwide criminal database exists. Not even the FBI has one. (The NCIC, or National Crime Information Center, is only available to law enforcement officials.) So, you’ll be slogging through boxes in lots of courthouses and statehouses if your criminal background check subject has moved around a lot. If your subject has attended a private school or college, consider contacting them, as well. Some colleges and universities don’t report crimes committed on campus for fear of bad publicity, especially minor crimes and student-on-student crimes. To ensure that your subject’s wild-oats days weren’t a source of criminal activity, you’ll want to contact the campus police or public safety officials.

Let’s suppose that you did manage to lift a good clear set of son-in-law-to-be’s finger prints from his water glass at dinner and you want the FBI to run them. You’ll have to fill out a request form, wait for it to be processed and then wait 24 hours to a week to get your results. The FBI can tell you if the subject has ever served in the military, ever been employed by local, state or federal government, and whether or not his fingerprints are on file for any other reasons (gun ownership, criminal record, etc.) Employers are supposed to be assured of a 24 hour response for prospective employees, but the general public may have to wait a while for their results. I think that’s probably a deterrent to prospective fathers-in-law and other nosey neighbors.

Whether or not your search turns up anything is a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you hope to find. You can hire someone to do the “dirty work” of slogging through old case files. You can spend weeks and even months before you find out what you did or didn’t want to know. My best advice is to hire an online criminal background check firm like Instant People Check and let them do the work for you. They’ve got nearly instant access to local, state and federal records you could never search as quickly or as thoroughly. And they don’t need the boy’s fingerprints to do it!

Perfect Pairings

The Chicago Bears and the playoffs, now that is what I call a perfect pair!

It’s that time of year to plan your playoff football parties, whether you are tailgating at Soldier Field or celebrating at home with friends. This month’s column will be devoted to tailgating party food and wines that both complement these spicy dishes and stand up to those bold flavors.

The Bears are “in” and so is California “Zin.” Other wines that also work are France’s southern Rhones and Australia’s Shiraz. I will discuss all three of these reds, as they are fairly interchangeable and pair well with this menu. One of my goals with this column is to introduce readers to new wine experiences. So, I would encourage you to try something new at this year’s football party.

Wine speak

Nothing beats the combination of a great grilled steak and California’s Cabernet Sauvignons or France’s Bordeaux wines.

However, football party menus tend to consist of chili, beef stew, braised meats and ribs. These flavors tend to be bold and spicy. To counter this, wines with loads of jammy fruit work well.

The following three wines, each worthy of its own column, will be briefly discussed today.

California (red) Zinfandel

Zinfandel is as unique as California. Its origins are European, but its exact lineage is the subject of much debate. Zinfandel tends to be loaded with fruit, has soft tannins and offers peppery spice notes. It is the second most widely planted red varietal in California, behind Cabernet Sauvignon. Key growing regions include Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley, Napa’s Spring Mountain District, Mendocino’s Anderson Valley and the Paso Robles region of Central California.

 France’s Southern Rhone (syrah-based) wines

The Rhone Valley of France is divided into two regions, northern and southern. The southern Rhone’s warmer climate, influenced by the Mediterranean, tends to produce wines with more fruit that are softer in nature. While the northern Rhone only uses syrah grapes in its reds, the southern Rhone’s reds are primarily a blend of grenache and syrah, with small amounts of mourvedre, carignan and cinsaut. As syrah in the south does not have enough character on its own, these other varietals are blended to add complexity to the wine. Key appellations in the southern Rhone region include Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and the Cotes-du-Rhone.

 Australia’s Shiraz

The southern coastline of Australia is home to this country’s wine industry. The sunny Mediterranean-like climate on this coast ensures a quality grape crop most every year. Shiraz is Australia’s leading red grape varietal, and makes up 40percent of its red grape production. Its origin is France’s syrah grape. Shiraz has been grouped into two styles, cool climate and hot climate wines. The cooler climate tends to produce a more elegant style while the hotter climates tend to produce wines that are bolder and “more in your face.” Key growing regions include South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and the Coonawarra region. New South Wales’ Hunter Valley, Victoria’s Yarra Valley and Western Australia’s Margaret River region round out this list.

 Food and wine pairings

What these three full-bodied, dark red wines have in common are loads of jammy fruit, lower tannin levels and peppery spice notes that work well with football party menus. While any of the three wines will complement your football food, there are subtle differences for optimal pairings.

• Zinfandels: Great with chili, hamburgers, ribs, beef teriyaki.

• Southern Rhones: Great with ribs, beef stew, braised meats.

• Shiraz: Great with char-grilled steak au poivre, BBQ ribs, braised meats, beef stew.

Child Chokes on Carrot and Dies – Does your Au Pair know CPR?

Tragedy struck a Long Island day school Wednesday, March 16, 2009, when police say a two-year-old girl died after choking on a piece of raw carrot.

According to the Carousel Day School in Hicksville, New York,  the girl began to choke after eating a piece of carrot.  Daycare employees tried to perform CPR on her, before rushing the toddler to Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics one child in the U.S. dies from choking on food every 5 days!

Is your au pair certified in CPR?  Did your agency train your au pair to adequately handle such an emergency if your child started to choke on food?  If your au pair does not have the CPR Certification or the necessary skills required to dislodge food from a child’s throat, it may mean the difference of life or death for your child.

We took a look at the 12 au pair agencies and we found health and safety information on all their sites that confirm all au pairs do receive some training in first aid and CPR. The U.S. Department of State requires that some form of basic training must be provided during the 4-5 day au pair orientation. 

We found that only one of the agencies provides the full CPR Core training that results in a CPR Certification!

Let’s take a look at what the agencies claim they provide (not all agencies are listed here as most of them only had one or two sentences regarding the “training” given to the au pairs before they are released to your home):

Au Pair In America

In terms of CPR training, Au Pair in America states their “Orientation includes seminars by American Red Cross (trained) instructors who provide hands-on demonstrations in infant/child CPR and safety.”  How much training is not stated and the au pairs do not receive a CPR Certification.

However, APIA will pay for an Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Certification for standard au pairs and Child/Adult CPR Certification for Educare au pairs.  The way it works is, your au pair finds a Red Cross training in your town, pays for it (or you do), completes and passes the course, receiving her Certification and APIA will reimburse you.  CPR training costs about $200 and it is well worth the money.

APIA is the only au pair agency that will reimburse your au pair for this training.

Au Pair Care

Au Pair Care has an Au Pair Academy where the au pairs receive “Hands-on American Heart Association CPR & First Aid training.”  They do not provide the CPR Core training that results in a CPR Certificate for the standard or educare au pairs.  They do provide CPR Certification for the au pairs enrolled in the Infant Specialized Program.

Au Pair Care’s Infant Specialized Program Training:

Au Pair Care is the only au pair agency that provides the CPR Core Certification Training,  but only in their Infant Program.

The training “utilizes a hands-on approach to train au pairs in infant safety and caregiving and infant stimulation and development.” AuPairCare Infant Specialized au pairs attend a certification course in infant CPR and First Aid by the American Heart Association. 

A spokesperson at Au Pair Care told us they could not guarantee all au pairs will pass the course (approximately 8+ hours training and a formal test), but she did said they have had “great success” with this program and the CPR Certification Training.

“Au pairs also receive instruction from AuPairCare trainers certified in Infant Massage with the Liddle KidzTM Foundation, and instruction from trainers certified in Infant Sign language by Baby Fingers, a leading Infant Sign Language learning organization.”

The Infant Specialized Care Program is a wonderful place to start if you have an infant and are considering au pair childcare – we highly recommend that if you have a child under the age of 22 months, call AuPairCare first!
