2008 Holiday Top Selling Categories – Baby Gifts

December 28th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

With the economic downturn it should be no surprise to anyone that holiday shopping numbers are coming in with limited or no growth in many of the top sectors of the business world. With the influx of product options online and the mass discounting and use of coupons the gross sales should maintain good numbers, but the net profit will be close to nothing. One of the best categories that buck the trend is the baby gift category.

It appears the old adage is true, certain things produce sales any time of year and in any climate. The birth of children and the virtual necessity of gifts being purchased for this rare and important event prove once again to be true in 2008. On the covers of magazines and in the news media there is more family and baby coverage than ever. It seems you can’t turn around without seeing which star is pregnant or may be pregnant and which family is adopting children. This probably ads to the cache of babies and the importance of not forgetting about the new parents and what gift may be helpful for them for their new arrival.

As far as which gifts in this category are getting the most play seem to be the following: Personalized gifts seem to be a common thread, no pun intended, and especially for families that already have older children. Within this category the usual blankets and such show strong trend and wood step stools which are perfect for a child being able to step up to the sink to brush teeth or wash hands. When these stools get customized with the child’s name it seems to be a home run. Little gift baskets and gift sets in the $50 range are typical this year as well. Those comprising an assortment or items that are fun and practical seem to be the best as well. Think stuffed animal, clothing, lotions, and toy. When you find a combination like that it covers all bases and shoppers seem the most in tune with it. Unique baby gifts are popular as well. Cool music cd’s, funky rock t shirts and tote bags that get multiple use are solid choices.

It remains to be seen exactly how the final numbers unfold. Amazon is reporting strong sales online which is optimistic news, but they play to the lowest common profit denominator. That means you have many retailers lowering their prices until the buyer chooses thus eliminating virtually all profit margin for the retail. That is the fear in this new online environment. Someone is always willing to sell for less online or in print advertisement and it hinders the industry as a whole from being able to succeed. I expect it to be closer to February or March until the best forecast of the 2008 holiday numbers come out, but the trend appears to maintain that the gift giving business is strong in the book, music, marital gift and baby gift segment.

Baby Ring Slings Provide Convenience

December 24th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

Are you a mother who is nursing or otherwise carrying your child often? A baby ring sling is the perfect choice for parents of children who are frequently carrying a child around in their arms. With the baby ring sling, it is a simple matter to keep your baby close to you all day long. Baby ring slings are simple devices that allow you to keep your baby with you and carry them around while leaving your hands free to do other things. It is a simple product that has seen a tremendous rise in popularity over the years. With so many individuals making use of baby ring slings, it is not surprising that sales of the product have increased rapidly. As more and more individuals find the need to utilize the baby ring sling, it only makes sense that the convenience and popularity of the product would become common knowledge to the world at large. With numerous different products available in various types of fabrics and designs, there is no end to the possibilities for individuals who are interested in utilizing baby ring slings for their family and personal comfort.

As more and more individuals make the choice to utilize the baby ring sling, it only logically follows that the popularity of the product in general will continue to rise. Although once considered a must have item, the product saw very little use until recently. In the 80s, baby ring slings and hands free type carriers were extraordinarily popular devices and made a huge comeback.

The art of carrying baby in a sling was long ago considered something people did because they had to. It was just logical for a mother to use a baby carrier so she could go about her life in a more uncomplicated fashion and keep her baby close by in a baby carrier. In some places the use of baby ring slings and hands free carriers has obtained the stigma as something the poorer people do because the rich people use strollers instead of baby carriers.

In recent years, the use of the baby ring sling has come back with a roar, seeing both mothers and fathers strapping on the baby ring sling for the convenience of transporting the baby around with ease. The difference between carrying a child in your arms and carrying one in the baby ring sling is like night and day. While carrying a child in your arms will quickly cause you to become fatigued, utilizing baby ring slings and similar carriers makes all the difference in the world and allows you to keep on doing what you need to do without tiring. With the leverage and comfort offered by the extremely popular baby ring sling, it only makes sense that so many individuals would make the effort to purchase more than one for their use. As more and more people take the time to provide themselves with the baby ring sling, it seems quite obvious that the trend will continue and that the product will be more and more common as time goes by.

Even today, there are very few families who do not possess baby ring slings or baby carriers to use for carrying their infant child around. With so much emphasis on the ability to hold your child hands-free, sparing your arms, back and shoulders from pain and continued muscle soreness, it only makes sense for individuals and families to make use of baby ring slings in order to save much work and effort and provide parents the convenience of having baby close while they go about their days.

3 Free, Must-use Baby Resources for Easy Parenting

December 15th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

There is some debate among mothers about what is the best advice for easily raising their babies. Is it following the guidelines of a specific guru? Finding out what works by trial and error? Listening to friends and family? Following the latest hot advice?

Here’s what I consider the best approach for moms all over the world… learning from others.

I’m sure you are well aware that there are some universal keys to baby development. That is, babies all over the world develop according to the same principles. Fortunately, almost all of these development principles and how to handle them have at some point in time been recorded, reported or experienced.

The only thing that you need to do… is find this information… and then use it.

What follows is my suggested list of 3 free baby information resources which you can start using today for the best advice to easily raise your baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Raising your baby easily and effortlessly begins with knowing the answers to the “common” questions. That is, there are a few problems almost all parents experience and want to know the answers to. The first approach is knowing the answers to these “common” difficulties. And then to avoid these pitfalls.

A quick and easy way of learning from others is to study the frequently asked questions asked by other parents.

** BabyZone is one such online site with content and resources covering the most important questions you may have. It’s an excellent destination for answers, timely suggestions, advice, lessons and tutorials on pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. access this great resource at http://www.babyzone.com

Discussion Forums

The second resource is to take part in some kind of open discussion. Rather than struggling to find out what works and what not, learn from others. Somewhere someone has already experienced and solved the same problem as you. And is willing to share the experience. Forums allow you to ask questions, express your opinion, and learn from others.

** About.com has a number of forums broken down by due date months, breastfeeding, caesareans, baby naming, pregnancy loss and more. You can enter as a guest and browse the previous posts, but you must register before posting or answering a message that’s already there. Registering is quick, simple, and free at http://pregnancy.about.com

“Looking Over The Shoulder”

One thing many parents find difficult is knowing how to do the things they read or hear. Despite getting all the information, some of us simply learn better and faster by seeing rather than by reading. That’s where local guidance centres are invaluable. It’s a great resource for sharing information and experiences many parents often overlook. But obviously, it’s not meant to substitute consultations with medical practitioners.

** The Expectant Mother’s Guide provides pregnancy, childbirth, and baby-related information for parents in specific metropolitan areas. Much of the available articles and resources are specific to a particular city or region. Consult http://www.expectantmothersguide.com for a list of countries and cities covered and served.

In order to consistently make the best decisions raising your baby, several things need to be considered. You want the information most suited to your situation. And you want to get it quickly and easily. These 3 free resources will surely help any parent to achieve that goal almost every time.

Better Dimensions to View Babies

December 13th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

Parents, particularly mothers have relied much on the technology of ultrasound to have them peek at the baby they are carrying. It all started with the 2D ultrasound sending out a two way wave flow to detect the movement and image of a baby inside the mother’s womb. It wasn’t for long when a higher level of medical technology, still in the likes of ultrasound device, has become commercialized; the 3D and 4D ultrasound.

Mothers can now say bye-bye to flat images of their baby as both 3D and 4D ultrasound devices provide better angular and dimensional views of the child they are carrying. This is due to the much distributed wave flow emitted by these two types of ultrasound, stepping a notch higher to the used-to-be two way flow of a 2D ultrasound. Given that a 3D and 4D ultrasound are two different entities, what sets the apart from each other?

In a 3D ultrasound, a more dynamic view of the child can be seen by the mother but it is more of a still image. On the other hand, instead of settling all over again to the 2D ultrasound, the 4D ultrasound comes to the scene allowing a much more dynamic view of the baby inside the womb of the mother including the movement.

As a parent, you may just be excited to try out these new ways to take a peek on your baby given for example that you are already pregnant. Breaks are needed to be stepped on in this situation. First, you should be able to determine first whether to get a 3D or 4D ultrasound. How this can be possible is with the help of your personal doctor. They are the ones more eligible to decide which process you are free to undergo. Some require one than the other depending on the need and condition of a mother’s pregnancy. In cases of normal pregnancy, it is more often that doctors do not advice mothers to undergo any ultrasound at all.

This may now lead to questioning whether a 3D or 4D ultrasound is really safe and can guarantee a deficiency free baby. There really is no recorded hazard brought about by any exposure to a 3D or 4D ultrasound. Though some researches are still in process, health specialists do not really require a mother to undergo such if there really is nothing wrong with either the mother or the child’s condition. Besides, ultrasound technology has already been in existence for 35 years.

Seeking some advice first before voluntarily admitting yourself to an ultrasound procedure can help you in your financial concerns. Most ultrasound sessions can be really costly and can take too much of your time. If you are on a tight budget and there really is no need to undergo any 3D or 4d ultrasound, don’t push for it. You may want to save up perhaps on the possibility that your personal doctor will advice you to undergo such if complications are detected on your condition.

A Baby Tote – Not Just For Mom

December 3rd, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

Some parents prefer to use a baby tote instead of a diaper bag. A baby tote is a large bag, frequently made of canvas, that you can put all the diaper bag items in and carry it around with you and the baby when you are going out of the house.

Diaper bags can frequently look more like a purse than anything and this where the baby tote comes in handy. Many dads would rather carry a baby tote with them when they take the infant or children out somewhere. A baby tote is more like a canvas grocery bag or book bag. It’s a bag, not a purse or diaper bag. And baby totes can hold a lot of baby’s items and still have extra room if needed.

A baby tote does not have to be a canvas bag, it can be made of any type of material, but canvas is a durable material and can hold up to many machine washings and assorted cleanings if need be. Some of the canvas baby tote bags have the hospitals name printed on them and are given to the parents as they leave the hospital for a going home gift. It’s usually filled with and assortment of items, such as diapers, wipes, coupons, formula, and perhaps a stuffed bear or a stuffed bunny. It is a nice way of thanking the parents for choosing the hospital and a way of advertising the hospital when the parents use the baby tote after they get home and use the baby tote when traveling about town.

A baby tote can be a useful toy carrier at the beach or park. It doesn’t have to carry only diapers, although many of the baby totes are large enough to carry several different items such as diapers, wipes, cream or powder and toys. A baby tote has many uses. You can put dirty or soiled clothing away in the baby tote and keep the clean clothing and diapers in an everyday diaper bag. You can hold toys, carry just the diapers and everything that goes with the diapers, carry food items or a change of clothing in the baby tote. Using the baby tote in addition to the diaper bag is a great idea when you need extra room too!

A canvas baby tote might have a pocket or two inside to hold your keys and wallet so you don’t have to carry a purse as well as the baby tote. Sometimes they are large totes and can hold many things and sometimes the baby totes are smaller and can only hold a few things such as small toys or a change of clothes for baby. A baby tote is convenient because you only have one place to look for what you need, unlike a diaper bag which can have lots of pockets and places to keep things and can be a little confusing if you forget where you put the wipes or a set of car keys.

A baby tote can be stylish, made of different materials to express your moods and feelings or to match your outfit and the babies. If you are good at crafts, you can make a baby tote yourself fairly easily, even if you can’t sew. This would allow you to make the baby tote the size that works best for you. No matter whether you decide to purchase one or make one from a pattern, a baby tote is a great item, and not just for mom!

Easy Ways To Avoid Spending Too Much On Baby Clothes

December 2nd, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

Dressing up your little angel in modern style doesn’t have to so costly. Here are a few guidelines in saving money when shopping for baby clothes.

1. Browse online at sale sites to check what sort of slightly used baby garment is available for auction. You can save a lot of money on almost new (at times never been worn) branded baby clothes.

2. Exchange with friends. Do you have close acquaintance who have kids just a bit grown-up than your own? You might be able to organize clothes swapping where each mom submits up baby garments her little one has outgrown.

3. Check with your friends for neighboring resources to assist you in finding more infant garments at a mark down sale. Some moms are a grand source for counsel on topics like this. If you aren’t a member yet, enlist for a local Moms Group and ask your mommy acquaintances at the subsequent meeting for ideas on searching baby clothes at a mark down. You might be

astounded to find out about local deals and steals.

4. Consignment stores are a new nice place to search for slightly used baby items without having to pay a fortune. You may discover that you incline toward baby clothing brought in by a specific seller. Ask the owner if she will inform you as soon as this person brings in fresh items. If you don’t hit upon something you’re attracted in, this may still be a fine place to get clothes that your baby has outgrown.

5. Go for garage and yard sales. These are frequently the places you can dig up the best deals, occasionally paying below one dollar per clothing. Make certain to systematically check every item before you pay for it, since you won’t be able to return it.

6. Enlist on a freecycling network. This is a grand means to unearth slightly used baby equipments, baby furniture, and even baby clothing and stuff. Freecycling provides you the capacity to contribute items you don’t need and get stuff you need. Look for a Freecycle Network in your vicinity by browsing online. After you hit upon a freecycling group, you can normally post your own needs and get some grand fresh items for the baby’s nursery, completely without charge.

7. Sew some baby clothes yourself. If you’re versatile with a sewing machine, you could pay for some patterns and cloth and make your very own baby clothes. On the other hand, if you’re similar to most new moms who almost don’t have enough time to take a bath, let alone sew fresh baby clothes for your rapidly growing angel, then you can solicit the help (either with the sewing or watching your child) of close friends or relatives. You may yet come across that a sewing group is a good group outlet and one that you can involve yourself in during the day while your little angel plays close by or naps.

8. Purchase online using a coupon code. Join the mailing lists of your preferred stores and stock up on requisites when they are conducting their online clearance sales. Always look for a coupon code before you pay for a purchase, as you can frequently come across important savings and, occasionally, free shipping on fresh baby clothes online.

Popular Name For Baby

December 2nd, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

We all want the best for our kids, right? So we all take our time in thinking of what name we should give our kids. For the past decade, giving our child a name is as complicated as to what names we should use. Whether we should use our initials, or use a relative’s name. At one point most of us is compelled to use simple or traditional names, just so the kid won’t have a hard time writing them down. Religious people tend to use names that are derived from the bible, which is actually okay since most of the names from the bible are really good and simple. But some of the names in the bible are quite hard to pronounce and spell.

I remember a friend who told me a story about herself when she was in kindergarten; she has three names aside from her last name which is also hard to spell. She cried when her teacher asked the class to write down their full name on the first line of their paper, when her teacher asked her why is she crying, she said because her name didn’t fit into the first line and she needs another line to write down all her names.

During the past year, according to the pediatricians, their patient’s name becomes harder and complex each year. One parent gave her son four different names and that doesn’t include the last name, poor kid!

Most of the parents use popular names for their children. The most commonly used names are: Jacob, Michael, Abigail, Joshua, Hannah, and Daniel. They’re popular because they all came from the bible. Other popular names are Ethan (just like Ethan Hawke), Benjamin, Caleb, and Zachary. Also the name Elijah has become popular since Elijah Woods became popular as well.

Even though, these names are still popular until now, modern names, and weird names dominated the list. Most of the parents I know have a kid with these names Emily, Olivia, Alexis, Emma, and Ashley. Some parents combine it with the name Sarah, Grace, or Rebecca.

I know someone who named their son Zepphyr Kristoffer. Sounds weird right? Zepphyr is a character from one of the anime’s the father is fond of watching. So from biblical to modern names, there’s also cross country or across the nation trend in naming kids. Some Americans name their babies Spanish or Chinese sounding names. Some of the popular across the nation names is Lian which is from Chinese origin which means a lotus flower. Another one is Carlos which is from Spanish origin which means free man or Alegria for a girl which means happiness.

Also name of places or country can be given as a child’s name, like Paris, London, China, Boston and whatever place that comes to mind. Greek gods/ goddesses’ name is also on top of the list: Athena, Xena, Eros, Olympia, and Venus.

Baby names have evolved from simple, biblical, modern, to weird. Jessica Alba’s baby was named Honor Marie. Many people have raised their eyebrows about the name, but for me it’s different. Sooner or later others will follow and will name their babies Honor. I guess other popular names are from the celebrities kids as well. I like Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s daughter’s name Violet. Shiloh, Zahara, Maddox, Pax, Viviene and Knox for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. And don’t forget Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s little girl Suri.

So no matter what we name our babies, all that matters is we give it a thought and we give it to them with all of our hearts. More importantly we instill in their minds that it is important to keep a clean name.

Baby Front Carriers – A Familiar Ride For Baby

November 29th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

If you have ever carried a child for extended periods of time in your arms, you are very likely aware that baby front carriers are a very effective method of carrying your child from place to place without fatiguing yourself. With such a fantastic and simple method of transporting your infant child, it is far easier to deal with the day-to-day activity in the life of a new mother or the parent of many. Suiting the needs of the mother, the child, and the rest of the family, baby front carriers are suitable for almost any function where a stroller or other type of baby mobility device is unsuitable. By utilizing a baby front carrier, you can ensure that your child is not a moment away from you and that you are not exhausting yourself by carrying baby in your arms. Many parents opt to use baby front carriers as the primary method of transporting baby instead of the commonplace baby pram or stroller. Because baby front carriers are easy to use and maintain, it is not surprising they have become immensely popular.

With the popularity of the baby front carriers, it is not uncommon to see all family members utilizing these types of products. By eliminating the weight on your arms and shoulders, it is far more comfortable to carry your child and keep them safe and protect them with a baby front carrier than if you were to simply carry them in your arms. With the baby front carrier, you have little to worry about, as your child is safe and secure in the device and cannot be dropped, thus avoiding any harm. Everyone knows a horror story in which a baby falls while being carried, and baby front carriers can help you avoid accidental injuries to your little ones. In the case of many individuals, the use of the baby front carrier is more important and suitable than almost any other type of device available. With so many people using the baby front carrier for their family, it is easy to see how the popularity and widespread use of the baby front carrier has spread to locations around the world.

The recent improvements to the design of baby strollers and baby prams had initially reduced the use of baby front carriers. But as more and more parents and families are spending additional time outdoors in their quests for healthy lifestyles and family bonding activities, the use of baby front carriers has continued to rise once again and seems to be again on the increase. Parents are able to take baby on long walks or hikes or even camping and are able to traverse uneven terrain and not worry about baby bouncing all over the bassinet while safely tucked into a hands free baby front carrier. Even on rough walking terrain, baby is not flopping all over because most carriers are designed to provide movement similar to the womb environment – gentle rolling bumps instead of jarring ones.

Considering that you can’t always utilize a stroller, no matter how lightweight, baby front carriers make a perfect substitute for individuals who want to carry their child close and in a comfortable fashion which is familiar to baby.

New Modern Baby Names: Fashions Change But Some Baby Names are Timeless

November 26th, 2009 admin Posted in home and family No Comments »

The World’s Largest Baby Name Factory

The U.S. Federal government’s Social Security Administration (SSA) has kept careful records of all new baby names in the U.S. from the 1880’s to the present. This database is available online for free for anyone to look at (you can find it at www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/). We’ve gone through the records and studied them can now share with you the fun and sometimes surprising results!

I studied the data at the SSA site, looking at the name popularity for the last 120 years: from 1887 through 2006.

Most Popular Names of All Time

When you look at baby name popularity over time you see that all names go through cycles, gradually increasing and decreasing over time.

To determine the most popular of all time, I decided that we should see which names have consistently been in the top 20, decade after decade. Which baby names were in the top 20 for the entire time from 1887 to the present?

Among boys the most popular are John (1st in 1887 and 20th today); William (2nd to 10th); James (3rd to 16th); and Joseph (7th to 11th).

There are fewer girls name that have stayed consistently popular across the decades. The best candidate I could find was Elizabeth, which ranked 4th, 21st and 11th in the 1880s, 1950s and 2000s. Its quite noticeable how girls names change more than boys names. Here are just some of the most popular baby girl names from the 1880s that are no where to be seen today: Minnie, Ida, Bertha, Clara, Florence, Bessie and Ethel. Of these only Clara appears in the top 1000 these days (position 260), and I personally think it a beautiful name deserving of more use. I don’t miss the other names much besides Florence, which has wonderful connotations.

Fallen Stars

Then there are the names that were very popular in the past but are used much less often today. These can be a good source of unique names for your child today but where the unique name will have a good dose of nostalgia. I call these the fallen stars.

Among boy names the stand out fallen star is George, which was #4 in 1887 but only 153rd most popular today. Charles went from 5th to 60th; Robert from 11th to 47th (but enjoyed a great run as #1 from 1924 to 1939); Thomas from 9th to 51st; Richard from 25th to 99th (but had a strong mid-century surge peaking at #5 in 1940s).

Girl names that have fallen out of favor include Mary, which was the #1 baby girl name in the 1880s but is only 55th in the 2000s. The most dramatic fall of any name is Minnie (yes, of Minnie Mouse fame), which was 6th most popular in the 1880s but has not even ranked anywhere in the top 1000 since 1971 when it was 951st. Apparently no one wants to be named after a mouse!

Nouveau Top Names

Lastly there are the names that are all the rage today but that are unique and strange and new to our ear – because they were not at all common in the past. Heading the list is Jacob, today’s #1 most popular boy name but it was only 56th in 1887 and hit a real low spot of 367th in 1962.

The name Michael has had real legs for over half a centruy now. It was 48th a 120 years ago but then climbed steadily and enjoyed an unprecedented streak as the #1 boy name from 1954 to 1998 (except for one year when it was #2 in 1960). Think of that – 43 years as the #1 boys name! Today Michael is #2.

A couple more new top boys names are Joshua: 247th to 3rd (but a low spot at 730th in 1929!), and Matthew which has gone from 123rd to 5th.

Emily from 98th to 1st with a mid-century low of 272nd in 1962.

No name better demonstrates the power of fashion cycles than the girls name Emma – it was 4th most popular in 1887, declined in popularity steadily until it was quite rare from the 1940s to the 1980s (e.g., it was 463rd most popular in 1963), and gained rapidly starting in the late 1980s, moving from 211th in 1986 to 2nd in 2006. Emma deserves a close second as it was 3rd in the 1880s and is 11th in the 200s but descended to 213th in the 1950s.

Most Improved Award

The girl baby name Madison gets the prize for most improved ranking in the shortest time. In 1985 it ranked a very low 625th, and in 2006 it was the 2nd most popular name – it moved up an impressive 623 positions in just 21 years.
